The Trophy Ghost

The ego does not abandon things. It promotes them to the rank of formative experience.

The guitar that stopped being played three years ago is not gone. It has become a trophy. Evidence of depth. Proof of a life with range. "I used to play guitar" is not a statement about the past. It is a present-tense identity claim — one that does not require the guitar to still be played to remain in force.

This is the trophy ghost.

The Double Function

The ADHD person — thrown in many directions, managing more open loops than most people know exists — learns to use the unfinished thing two ways simultaneously.

First, as avoidance. "I grew up. I don't need to play guitar anymore. That chapter is closed." The ghost stands in front of the thing and says a decision was made. No guilt required. The loop appears closed.

Second, as superiority. "I used to play guitar." "I used to be a bartender." The abandoned thing becomes a credential. A marker of complexity. Proof that the person has lived more versions of themselves than the room suspects.

The avoidance and the pride are the same ghost. The thing is gone and also still being held. It was abandoned and also protected.

Why the Ego Does This

Because the ego cannot afford to let go of anything without a story about why. An abandoned thing with no story is just failure. An abandoned thing with a story — "I outgrew it," "I moved on," "that was a different chapter" — becomes character.

The ghost Band-Aid at the identity level looks like wisdom. It feels like growth. And it prevents any real accounting of what was actually left unfinished and why.

The Tell

When the same thing appears twice — once as a reason something cannot be done, and once as evidence of who someone is — you are looking at a trophy ghost.

The bar is not whether you still play guitar. The bar is whether the story about it is true.
